Oatmeal Raisin Chocolate Chip Cookies

These are my favorite cookies ever.  I adapted the recipe from my mother's decades-old copy of The Joy of Cooking a few years ago and am often asked to bake them by friends.
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. Cream Together:
    • 1.5 sticks unsalted butter
    • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
    • 1 cup brown sugar
  3. Mix in:
    • 1 egg
    • 2 tablespoons water
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  4. Sift the following together and stir in:
    • 2/3 cup flour
    • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  5. Fold in:
    • 3 cups of oats
    • 2/3 cup of raisins
    • 2/3 cup of chocolate chips*
  6. Scoop cookies onto parchment lined baking sheet.
  7. Cook for 15 - 17 minutes.
* Most people love that these have both chocolate chips and raisins in them.  My brother, however, thinks the chocolate chips take away from the cookie, whereas the first time my boyfriend tried them, he asked, "Why did you put raisins in?"  To each his own.  Just add a bit more than a cup total of whatever you prefer: raisins, craisins, chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, m&ms... you get the idea. Also, I'll have you know that, despite the remarks, neither of the guys stopped enjoying them!
